TRAVEL

Look, Ma, I'm on TV! Me + The Travel Channel Metropolis

I'm going to be honest- I don't like photos of myself so why would I agree to be interviewed for the Travel Channel Metropolis? And if I got over my self-consciousness and shyness, why oh why would I ever agree to talk about porchetta? Aired in June 2015.

Here's the synopsis:  Metropolis stars reveal Rome as you've never seen it before. How did secret ingredients and an ancient recipe build the first metropolis? Also, learn how American GIs helped create an iconic pasta dish.

Let's talk about breakfast.... me + #Iocominciobene

Early this month, I was asked my favorite question-- what do I eat for breakfast? Italian website "Io Cominico Bene" asked me to share with them what I do, what I eat and who I eat with in a question and interview session.  I was then asked to submit four photos that captured the following:

  • My breakfast
  • Breakfast with kids
  • A special breakfast
  • Our morning view

I hope you enjoy "Colazione italo-americana: intervista a Erica Firpo" published on Tuesday, December 2, 2014.  I've included my English translations.

Indovinate chi è passata a trovarci a colazione?

Colazione internazionale

Cosa fai appena sveglia? Hai qualche rito particolare?

Q.  What do you do as soon as you wake up? Do you have any particular rituals?

A. I always wake up hungry. I have to eat or else I will be in a bad mood and the day won't go well for any one. As soon as I wake up, my husband hands me a cappuccino (made with oat milk) and I eat a grapefruit and/or yogurt with honey. My ritual? Set the table. My mom always told me the day goes better if you start it looking right.

Ogni mattina e’ sempre divertente a casa nostra.

Q.  With whom do you have breakfast? Do you have an anecdote to share about "family breakfast"?

A. My husband and I make breakfast for the girls. Every morning is always fun at our house. During the week, our little one is always a bit more difficult (she's a grouch like me), the big one is (luckily) simply tired and Darius is always in a rush. We are crazy! Usually the girls eat first, we bring them to school (in two areas totally far away from each other) and we return home to have breakfast together, more relaxed.  Instead our Saturdays and Sundays are more relaxed and the kitchen is a restaurant! I always have to have something totally sweet.

Q.  What do like the most about breakfast?

A. I love the peacefulness that comes with the first sip of coffee.

Q. We know that your breakfast is a little Italian and a little American, which of each tradition do you like the most?

A.  Coffee is fundamental but since I am good american girl, along with sweet I need protein!

Q: If your breakfast was a photgraphic detail, what would it be?

A. A kaleidescope. For me, breakfast must be colorful and abundant.

Roadtesting Lavazza's Espressgo

In December, I was invited by  Lavazza to join 9 other social media chiacchieroni in Milan and Rome to spend a personalized day with Espressgo, Lavazza's very clever portable espresso-maker. I needed to catch up on some street art, so I chose to head to Rome's Quadraro neighborhood first thing in the morning.  And of course, I needed a caffe...

The Concept:  Espressgo is a magic thermos that allows you make a shot or two A modo mioespresso flavors in a matter of minutes, and all while in the comfort of your car.   It is the very definition of Italianismo-- from concept (efficient espresso shot) to design (sexy, slick, high tech) to philosophy (everybody needs espresso on the go) to communication (it inspires conversation).

The Basics:  The Espressgo has an "on" button, temperature dial and 12-volt plug.  You will need a 12-volt/cigarette lighter outlet is required, a bottle of cold water and espresso cups.  Likewise, sugar and milk should that be your flavor.

The Process:  Unscrew lid (which will act as filter), add 50ml of cold water, put in the capsule, screw on lid, plug it to outlet and press on. Brewing takes approximately 1 minute with a nice vibration, after which you just need to wait approximately 30 seconds for three "beeps" which alert you that the espresso is ready.  Then you just unplug, flip thermos over and pour into a cute cup.

My reaction ~ a three-part revelation:

    • Espressgo is my mother's dream come true.  When my family went on road trips, my mom would make bottles of espresso and bring them with us because it would be hours before we could put our moka on a stovetop.  These bottles were sacrosanct and could be not broken, misplaced or emptied.
    • It is cute, adorable and very easy to use. I had no problem making the shots and I loved it. Its design is perfect for a driving picnic, and super cute.  My only wish that it came with a portable foaming device because I am milk-addicted.
    • It is the perfect wing man.  Imagine yourself at a stop light.  With espresso ready to go,  you timidly offer a shot of espresso to the cutie to your left. . .  oh, the things I could do.....
